SOMERSET BASKETBALL READY TO START DISTRICT PLAY

District 28-3A Doesn't Have Clear Leader
By Brett Wilson Sr.

District 28-3A up for grabs! With only Sam Houston and La Vernia a little over .500 this year in non-district games, potential playoff teams remain unclear heading into District games.

The Bulldogs, whose record at 6-15, are only a few games out of third place. When District starts, it looks like anyone can make a run for the playoffs.
Somerset is led in scoring by Jacob Gonzales with a 15 point per game average. Hunter Dorman contributes 8 ½ points per game. Jimmy Yanez. Justin Camarillo, and Koy Detmer Jr. are scoring 7 points per game. Jalen Avila has 6 points per game. Justin Guerra is shooting 5 ½ points a game, and Bobby De Leon has 5 a game. Rocky Reyna has 4 ½ a game.
Current Standings
Sam Houston      8-5
La Vernia      7-6
Pleasanton      8-11
Somerset      6-15
Hawkins      3-13
Poteet        3-16

Early Outlook for Somerset Baseball!
By Brett Wilson Sr.

Somerset lost a huge part of their team to graduation, but return 4 players that started last year. The Bulldogs are looking to reload for this year, but start with a good core.      Returning for 2013 is Two Time League MVP Donny Perez at 3rd base. First Team All District Tyler Sollohub returns at 2nd base, and will see a lot of pitching duty as well. Honorable Mention Koy Detmer Jr. returns at shortstop, and will also pitch some innings. Eden Rodriguez returns to the outfield as a solid, sometimes spectacular fielder.

Somerset won the past two District Championships in a row. If they repeat again this year after reloading the team, there should be serious Coach of the Year consideration. Head Coach Donaldo Perez, Assistants Kris Barcenez, Richard Lee, and Bo Caddell are one of, if not the best, high school coaching staffs in the area.

Several players looked good during fall ball, so there should be good competition for many open starting positions.
